I opened up my facebook to 4 friends talking about Oil Pulling. The practice of swishing with coconut or sesame oil for EXACTLY 20 minutes. Talking about everything from curing hangovers to preventing cancer. Where is science when you need it? All they can say is it isn't bad for you, but some of the backup stories read just like a viral ad. ONE SIMPLE TRICK TO CURE CANCER BITCHES :) Maybe I will see if I can prove something by swishing with some linseed oil. Hey it worked in engines!

Since this is a car site, someone should try with a good 5w-40.

I called my dad to wish him a happy birthday yesterday and he went off an a rant about how big of a pain in the ass people who believe in home remedies are for ya know, real doctors. I was laughing so hard I was in tears, it was great.
For the record, they are not a pain in the ass because HR works, they are a pain in the ass because these people believe in bullshit instead of science.

I know many doctors in my family and circle of friends. They say between the lack of General Practitioners coming out of medical school, "Dr. Google", and just straight up bullshit, the medical field is in dire straits these days.
Last year I lost one of my best friends to cancer because his wife convinced him his STAGE 4 FUCKING PANCREATIC CANCER was curable by home remedies. (sorry for the language, I am still burned up about it)

Hmmn. I'd never heard of this before, but there's at least some chance it does actually do something.
For starters, it might well dissolve fat-soluble deposits in your mouth that aren't water-soluble and so are hard to remove by brushing. (There's not an awful lot of difference, in chemical terms, between 'solvents' and coconut oil.) At the very least, that would (if it occurs) help with bad breath and tooth discolouration.
On top of that, there are said to be some rather odd links between oral hygiene and general health - might be bad epidemiology, since people who can't brush their teeth properly are unlikely to be taking care of their bodies properly, but might also be to do with something unknown; no-one thought stomach ulcers were caused by bacteria until recently, for example, so it's not totally implausible that some bacterium which grows on badly-brushed teeth causes some other seemingly unrelated ailment.

Dude, I hear you. My mom almost died from breast cancer, my sister had Rhabdo-something-something, my cousin died from stomach cancer, and now one of my good friends from college has cancer and his wife posts the most ignorant crap on FB and his Caringbridge site that I pretty much had to block her. Fortunately they seem to be going through his treatment appropriately but her commentary on the process makes me seriously worried.

oh there might be a chance. I know of one other substance that is only solvable by oil only :) You know, that one that is legal for medical use in 20 states now.
Anyhow, a clean mouth is certainly good for your whole being, but I also think that killing the stuff in your mouth may be detrimental if your body doesnt get a taste of it now and then. (I brush 2 times a day though)

I've seen this on facebook as well. Looks harmless to me. It probably does help with bad breath and cleaning your teeth. As for all the other stuff, placebo effect.
